Tohoku - Japan
This is a human powered ski trip in Tohoku, the Northern tip of the main island Honshu. We’ll immerse ourselves in Japanese culture, staying at a traditional Ryokan and learning from our Japanese-speaking tail guide. This will provide us quick access to untouched powder away from the ski lifts in some of the least traveled areas in Japan. Despite having on average the deepest annual snowpack recorded in Japan on Mt Hakkoda, Tohoku still remains a relatively untouched gem.

Guides - Tohoku
Alex Geary will lead this trip in conjunction with a Japanese speaking tail guide to help with logistics, cultural experience, safety and trail breaking.

Itinerary - Tohoku
Day 1: Arrival & Onsen Retreat
Arrive in Aomori by bullet train or short flight from Tokyo. We’ll pick you up in the afternoon, stop to pick up lunches for the next few days, then drive 45 minutes to our onsen hotel, located in Hakkoda—home to Japan’s deepest snowpack. Settle in and relax in the natural hot springs before the adventure begins.
Days 2-4: Ski Touring in Hakkoda
Spend three days exploring Hakkoda’s incredible backcountry terrain, with the option to ski directly from Sukayu or take short drives to access the best conditions. Enjoy traditional Japanese breakfasts and dinners at the ryokan, and unwind in the onsen after each day on the mountain.
Day 5: Transfer to Mt. Iwate
After a morning ski session—either in Hakkoda or en route—we take a 2.5-hour drive to an authentic onsen hotel on the north side of Mt. Iwate. Along the way, we’ll stop to pick up lunches for the days ahead.
Days 6-8: Ski Touring Around Mt. Iwate
Ski tour in the Mt. Iwate region, exploring scenic backcountry terrain with the possibility of summiting Mt. Iwate, conditions permitting. Each evening, enjoy a well-earned soak in the onsen and traditional meals at the hotel.
Day 9: Departure
We’ll drop you off in Morioka in the morning, where you can catch the bullet train back to Tokyo for an evening flight.
